St. Hildegard was a 12th century Abbess and Nun. Otherwise known as Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179), she was a remarkable woman. At a time when few women wrote, Hildegard, also know as "Sybil of the Rhine", produced major works of theology and visionary writings.>
St. Hildegard was also a healer. She deeply believed in the God-given powers of nature to heal. She used, and wrote about, the healing power of plants and animals. It is very likely that she used herbs as medicine with her nuns, priests, and lay people.
As an Abbess, Hildegard founded two abbeys in Germany. She was a remarkable leader, considering the limits placed on women at that time. She didnít often settle on the conventional in that she was passionate about ministering to people and their true needs. She insisted on doing so even when it went against strict 12th century church policy.
